Shorts made of cotton, lace or seamless microfiber, in low or high rise: the most covering cut, which sits slightly on the thigh and doesn't ride up when walking.
A shorty fully covers the bum and extends the leg by a few centimetres, similar to a very short pair of shorts. This extra length is its purpose: it prevents the knickers from riding up when walking, making it the most stable style of all, especially under a skirt or dress.
Three reasons come together. The contact surface is spread over a wider area, so the pressure from the elastics is less. The coverage of the thighs reduces skin-to-skin friction, a real issue in summer and for many body types. Finally, the absence of high cutouts avoids the mark in the groin area. It is also for these reasons that the women's shorty is often recommended after pregnancy or surgery.
This is its main criticism, based on classic hemmed models: the leg line can show under fitted trousers. The answer exists and is called laser cutting. A shorty in microfibre cut without hems or elastics leaves no marks, even under tight jeans. Models in stretchy lace, with scalloped edges that blend into the skin, also work well.
Take your usual size: unlike a thong, the women's shorty doesn’t adjust by going up a size, it then slips down the hips. In terms of material, a women's cotton shorty, ribbed or elastane, is suitable for everyday wear and can withstand hot washes. Microfibre is reserved for fitted clothing. The lace women's shorty, finally, turns a style known for being discreet into a piece that matches a bra, and the high-waisted shorty extends this concept above the navel.
