Lace or satin garter belts, with four or six garters, thin belts or whalebone corsets, and wedding garters: the items that hold up non-sticky stockings and complete an outfit.

A women's garter is a belt worn around the hips, from which elastic bands with clips extend to hold up stockings. It is only used with non-hold-up stockings: a hold-up stocking, which stays up on its own due to the silicone band, makes it unnecessary. This is the most common confusion when buying.

Women's garters with four or six attachments

The number of attachments affects the fit, not just the look. A model with four attachments, two in the front and two in the back, is enough for an evening and remains the most discreet under a dress. A model with six, featuring two additional attachments on the sides, distributes tension better and prevents the stocking from twisting around the thigh: this is the choice when wearing it for a full day or with thin stockings that slide. Integrated garters within a boned waist cincher offer the best stability of all.

What size of garter to choose

This is where the main mistake lies: the garter should be chosen based on the hip measurement, not the waist measurement. If worn too high, on the waist, it pulls the stockings uncomfortably and shifts with every movement; worn on the hips, as intended, it stays in place and the attachments hang straight down. Also check the adjustable length of the attachments: if they are too short, they pull on the stocking and tear it at the clip.

Garters or wedding garter

Both terms are often confused, even though they refer to distinct pieces. The wedding garter is a simple elastic band worn alone at the top of the thigh, without a holding function, and pertains to wedding tradition. The women's garter, on the other hand, is a functional accessory. If you are looking for a piece for a wedding, both exist, but only the latter will actually hold up your stockings. A women's garter set typically includes the garter, a thong, and matching stockings, sometimes a bodysuit. There are also models designed for curvy women, with a wider belt and six attachments instead of four.

Attaching and securing a women's garter

The action may seem daunting rather than difficult, and the order matters. First, put on the belt flat on the hips, then the stockings, and only attach them at the end. Each clip consists of a metal ring and a button: slide the edge of the stocking into the ring, then lift the button from underneath until it catches. Attach the front garters first, flat against the front of the thigh, then the back ones. Three mistakes account for almost all failures: attaching the stockings before putting on the belt, adjusting the garters too short, which pulls on the fabric and tears it at the clip, and placing the belt on the waist instead of the hips. If a stocking comes loose while walking, it is almost always the length that needs to be extended, not the clip that needs tightening.
