Boxer, boxers, briefs, socks, pyjamas, robes, bodysuits, technical leggings and swimwear: the nine categories of menswear, from everyday underwear to nightwear.
The types of men's underwear are divided into three groups. The everyday men's underwear, boxers, boxers, and briefs, chosen based on the cut and waistband. The nightwear and loungewear, pyjamas and robes. And the technical or seasonal pieces, socks, thermal tights, and swimwear.
The boxer is fitted and cut mid-thigh: this is the most common style, the only one that works under tight trousers or for sports. The boxers are loose and wide, favouring comfort and are often worn at night. The briefs are the shortest and closest to the body, invisible under any fitted garment; in cotton men's underwear, it is also the coolest cut in summer. In all three cases, the wide waistband stitched flat is what determines the lifespan of a men's underwear.
The last type of men's underwear is not quite an underwear piece anymore: pyjamas and robes are chosen based on material and season. Socks are chosen for their height as much as their material, as a sock that is too short immediately shows under formal trousers. Tights, finally, here are thermal men's underwear worn as a base layer for cold or sports, and not visible pieces.
Three cuts of underwear share everyday life, the boxer fitted mid-thigh, the boxers that are loose, and the briefs that are reduced to the minimum of material. The body, rarer, is used to keep a shirt looking sharp under a jacket. Regarding night and loungewear, men's pyjamas and men's robes are chosen based on the material and season. Remaining are the seasonal and sports pieces, men's socks, men's tights worn as thermal base layers, and men's swimwear, from shorts to swim briefs.
