Stockings and hold-ups: sheer legs without full tights
Self-holding stockings with silicone bands that stay in place, classic stockings to wear with suspenders, fishnet stockings or sheer stockings: legs dressed without the knickers of tights.
A stocking stops at the top of the thigh, without the panty of an opaque tight. Two types exist: the female hold-up stocking, with a silicone band on the inside that sticks to the skin and holds up on its own, and the classic women's stocking, which requires a garter belt. The first has largely taken over due to its simplicity, while the second remains essential when looking for an outfit that lasts throughout the day.
How to keep hold-up stockings in place
This is the most common complaint, and it has identifiable causes. First, the width of the silicone band: it should be at least five to eight centimetres, as a simple trim won't hold for more than a few hours. Then, the cleanliness of the skin: applying moisturiser or oil just before prevents the silicone from adhering; this is the number one reason why women's hold-up stockings keep slipping down. Lastly, size matters—a women's stocking that's too big won't hold the band properly.
Fishnet, sheer or opaque stockings
The fishnet stocking is the most popular in the category, ranging from wide mesh to discreet micro-netting suitable for urban wear. Sheer stockings, under 20 deniers, dress the leg for a formal outfit. Opaque stockings, starting from 40 deniers, cover like tights while leaving the top of the thigh free, making them more comfortable in heated interiors. The lace at the top edge, very common, serves both to decorate and to conceal the silicone band.
Stockings or tights: when to prefer stockings
Three situations call for them. In overheated interiors, where the panty of a tight provides unnecessary warmth. For larger sizes, where tights can compress the stomach while stockings touch only the thigh. And for outfits where tights are visible at the waist under fitted clothing. Conversely, for cold weather or a day of walking, tights remain more stable. This back-and-forth is what makes the tights and socks category interesting: three varieties for the same leg, chosen according to the season and duration of wear.
